Here we introduce a new index of national power (NPI). As far as we know, this is the only available quantitative index of national capacity that has been validated against an external criterion variable. Instead of jumping into the fairly complex technical stuff, we start this section with an examination of the power-hierarchy revealed by the index by way of graphical display. Then we will move into the necessary technical material.
The organization of this section is as follows:
- Power Hierarchy: Graphic display of power hierarchy
- Winning Probability: Methodological foundation for connecting index values to associated winning probabilities in a bilateral competition
- Validations: Validation of the NPI scales by using external criterion variables
- Decomposition: Index construction and decomposition of the index in terms of its two components
